Paperwork

These are the things I am going to have to admin before I can launch my boat on the water. The next few posts will record my progress on the paperwork and also my progress in becoming a competent sailor. This will also act as a reminder and filing system for me.

1. Licence

The type of licence I need depends on what I plan to do with the boat, where I am taking it, how long for and how big it is. For two weeks of leisure boating in a small dinghy, I am Looking at about £80-90 unless I am gravely mistaken. Here are the different types of licence. Here and here are the places to get a licence

2. Insurance

I might accidentally bump into someone elses boat, or they might bump into mine. Either way, I won't be able to afford to repair the damage. I need third party insurance of at least £1,000,000. This .pdf represts a day of calling up insurers to get the best price, or the most up to date list from here.

3. Map of the route to the Humber

We will be crossing several counties, and several water authorities during the journey. For this reason I am having to stitch together a map of the waterway from several sources. Important things to pay attention to on the map are; locks, bridges, weirs, depth and width of the river or canal.

4. Safety

The boat equivalent of an MOT. If the vessel is not up to standard, authorities may order it to be removed from the water. I don't want that to happen.

5. Instruction in proper sailing

I shall be learning here
